Office of the Auditor

In Ohio, the Office of County Auditor began with its establishment in 1820. The number of functions and importance of the functions assigned to the County Auditor grew until now it has been referred to as the most important single administrative office in local government.

In terms of dollars, the Cuyahoga County Auditor's Office is responsible for legally and efficiently regulating over $3 billion dollars a year.

Under Ohio law the Cuyahoga County Auditor's Office establishes the legal and fair tax value for the 500,000 real property lots in Cuyahoga County. The total value of real property (land/buildings) exceeds $61 billion.

It is the Auditor's responsibility to distribute property tax monies to school, cities, libraries, metro parks, Mental Retardation Board, and other local governments. This amount is about $1.4 billion.

The Auditor is the guardian of the County's financial standing and records. The Auditor is further charged with the responsibility of ensuring that when you visit the grocery store, buy gasoline or purchase any product by weight or measurement that you get what you pay for.

For those individuals on limited incomes the Auditor administers the Homestead Exemption for over 35,000 households, a program which allows reduction in tax based in income levels.

The County Auditor's Office is further charged with issuing over 80,000 dog licenses, vendor and cigarette licenses, personal property taxes, hotel/motel taxes, and manufactured home taxes.

Automatic Data Processing Board

The Auditor is responsible for the management of the County Data Processing Center and serves as the Chief Administrator of the Automatic Data Processing Board. Changes in computer systems and planning must be approved by the Board to automate various County functions. Improving financial and record keeping systems of the County improve services, reduce costs and provide County officials with a modern management tool to better administer the business of government.

Board of Revision

The Auditor is the permanent Secretary of the Board of Revision which also includes the County Treasurer and the President of the Board of Commissioners. It is the responsibility of the Board of Revision to rule on property assessment prior to the issuance of the real estate tax list. Property valuation complaints are also heard.
